ip geographic location
ip geographic location
Hmmm, just noticed that the upload check gives my geographic location as United Kingdom, just for fun I tried some free online services and was rather amazed at the varying answers (australia, various parts of the US etc.). I'm actually on roadrunner from eastern North Carolina, anyone have any idea how accurate these locators are these days?
Not sure if a new database would change much considering the underlying problem. Look at me for instance, I connect through roadrunner from eastern north carolina and essentially get whatever address they map out for me. If you simply look at the whois information you find that the current ip used was assigned to australia originally but is now owned by a holding company in the UK that's a wholly owned subsidiary of the Time Warner owned roadrunner entity which would put it in the UK with actual ownership in the US. If you map the connection by tracing connectivity you will find that it goes through Charlotte NC, Atlanta GA, Virginia or any of a dozen major connections to other providers.

If you do it right: "he this sites knows it's raining outside!"DM. wrote:Is location really that important? As far as I see it, its just a cosmetic thing. Doesn't really add much besides: "Hey! This site knows where I live!"

What I was using it for previously, and it's not such a big deal now, is to help me detect if you might be an EU player who was submitting data as a US player. With the addition of being able to programmatically detect if you are playing on EU or US servers, this check is really unnecessary anymore.

Well, got California so at least the right continent, just the wrong coastWyriHaximus wrote:I'm using http://www.hostip.info/ alot. I would realy reccomend it since I allways have good results with it (this far). Maybe you guys can try it out and see if I'm right.

...and not a big deal at all if it's not correct, was just curious if it was getting more accurate but it looks like until we start using IPv6 the trading of IP ranges will likely make automatic tracking very much a hit and miss thing.

IPv6 would be very interesting with this, it would be possible to even figure out if there is a fire close to someone. Or if it's raining or if the police had a call in y our street. On the otherhand it can be a danger.
Hehe, actually went a month and a half without logging into WoW at all, not really playing anything (except Civ IV and some Wii games with wife and kids). Wife and me will still be playing WoW for a bit but between work and the kids we end up with very little time, just a few hours at most once or twice a week if that... WoW simply doesn't have that li'l extra any more to get us to sacrifice some sleep to playRollie wrote:So hey Alanthus, doesn't seem like your chars are levelling, whatcha playing lately?

Yeah WoW is really becoming quite boring. I notice that IF and SW are more busy as well because no one is even out in the Outland. I am definitely keeping an eye on WAR and suspect I will at least try it when it comes out. Blizzard should be pretty scared about this game imo. WoW is just too broken right now with class balance for me to care about PVPing. Hopefully WAR can figure this out.Alanthus wrote:Hehe, actually went a month and a half without logging into WoW at all, not really playing anything (except Civ IV and some Wii games with wife and kids). Agreed, I've all but lost interest in WoW. It's been a couple weeks since I logged in.oiseaux wrote:Yeah WoW is really becoming quite boring. That was me about a year ago, but right now I'm as hooked as ever =/
Maybe because I have a clear set of goals I'm working towards, albeit slowly. Karahzan key (done), rep for Herocis (in progress), honor and arena points for better PVP gear (got rare PVP chest last night), grinding/questing for gold for epic mount (3k gold and counting).

Sadly, I think WoW has seen its high peak and it will only begin to decline more and more each month. Sure, there are a lot of people out there still playing the game, but I think it is because there is no other competition. There really is nothing out there like WoW to give Blizzard a kick in the ass to get their game fixed. It has taken them 3 months to fix graveyards in Blade's Edge and they still have NEVER fixed warlock pets with the flying mount. These small things is what will become the end of this game. It won't be overnight, but it is slowly declining.
Edit: 1+1+1=3 I can't count haha
