I believe that in the case of WoW there is a great investiment in the social aspects. There are many tools for that players interact with each other and those who permit that players can construct your own WoW community. So, for me, social element is the most important diferential than the other MMORPGs...
What do you think?

No major difference from the other major contenders. WoW came on the heels of the very sucessful FFXI. Warcraft had a much larger fan base. This alone could be the reason it broke the previous records FFXI had set.
Also broadband was getting more popular at that point.

Well, WoW's other two big draws were the ability to solo through most of the game if you want to, and also allowing for casual play (at least up until endgame raiding, but no game has really figured that out yet.) I played FFXI for 3 years myself, and I enjoyed it, but soloing was horribly time inefficient. Nowadays with some of the changes they've made it's a little better there, but the player is still rewarded much more for grouping. I enjoy the fact that I can hop on WoW for like an hour and still feel like I actually accomplished something.

WoW is pretty. That's the difference. The images are appealing, almost comical at times. The hardcore gamer doesn't care about that, and he'll play games with aliens that have guts dripping blood hanging out of their eyes and bleak, dark color schemes. The casual gamer and the newbie gamer will however take a liking to WoW's "prettiness". And that's how you get 9 million subscribers.

That's the thing, highler poly counts, more realistic renderings... those things don't matter to anyone but hardcore gamers with top of the line gaming computers. The average gamer plays on their work computer or their travel laptop. They can't see the top quality settings even if they wanted to, and "more realistic" doesn't translate into pretty in any way.
WoW's graphics are visually appealing while many games with excellent quality of graphics simply aren't.

It has nothing to do with graphics....
You want to see a game ahead of its time check out Vanguard, but it failed miserably because 90% of people didn't have computers that could run more than 5 fps at the low settings. The graphics in that game are amazing, but really people play wow because everyone else does.
When I did closed beta testing for wow for 6 months everyone told me the game was gonna flop, and EQ2 was better. I couldn't get anyone to play it. Now I just mention some wow Acronym, and 5 people come out of nowhere to tell me they play it. I have 10 coworkers who play that most started a year after it came out.
Wow is most successful because it appeals to everyone....casual gamer, pve, pvp, hardcore, etc.....everyone fits in.
Actually I am curious what 38 Studios comes out with. They are working on a MMO. It is owned by Curt Schilling of the Boston Red Sox, and he is a hardcore raider from EQ, and now WoW so you know he knows what people want.
Also Warhammer online will be what a pvp game is meant to be. It will definately get its market share, but I doubt WoW will ever die unlike most MMO's that eventually merge to 1 server after a few years of success.
