Thoughts on under lvl 10 characters?

Post by Rollie »

So I've caught a little heat for ditching the data on the under 10 characters. What are some of you guys' thoughts about it?

There are 2 reasons I do not count those characters.

1- There are many, many alts & other throw away characters. Keeping them just skews the numbers.

2- Keeping the under 10 characters will increase the database size by roughly 30% as there are that many more sub 10 characters than the rest. Larger database size could mean longer times to execute the on the fly queries needed for the main census display that offers such great filtering options.

Now, since I added in the ability to filter based on level, you could effectively remove those sub 10 characters from view so I guess point 1 can be negated. Point 2 on the other hand could be an issue, but I really don't know without having another 300k characters added in.

Thoughts?

personnally I'd like to have a peek into what happens pre-10.. those data are collected so it seems a waste not to use them. A study of what classes are abandonned, for example, could be improved by taking the first levels into account.

however, the default settings should remain 10-60 because they simply give a more accurate image.

212,823 out of 822,759 (26%) are level 10 or below according to WoWcensus.com. That is a huge statistical black hole. 1-20 actually is the first chunk of data anyone with common sense would dump when comparing population of a server.

Level 1-20 is 54% of the data on WoWcensus.com. I am guessing at least 75% of those character are never going to be played again and/or were only created to take a census. In the future (6+ months) level 1-20 may be worth recording, but currently there is a flood of characters that are played for a couple hours and forgotten and/or deleted.

If WoW sold 240,000 copies on day one... I would assume 400,000 accounts are active by now after the holiday season. Eliminating 1-20 really gets us closer to the actual # of people that are playing the game... not just collecting data on a bunch of Alts and one night projects.

This heavily skews the #'s and doesn't accurately reflect any useful data. I say no to <10.

But if the data is being collected... maybe allow people to pull it up somehow. However do not include it in overall data... as it really really presents a false picture.

I know personally I have a dozen level 1-10 characters scattered around servers that I've used to run census' or waste time while other servers are down.

Haha Rollie, I'm catching heat for not ditching these results :)

I wouldn't stress it to much Rollie, the next version of Census will have a pseudo-timestamping involved in it. I hope to send you a list of all the changes, some documentation, and a sample SavedVariables.lua by the end of this week.

Considering the timestamp changes that are coming and the fact that you already have the option of displaying data by level I would definately go with including them in the data. As time passes the "active" characters in this level segment will become a smaller and smaller part of total data.

And it is interesting to see how many low level chars of certain classes are abandonded before they actually come to what makes the class worth playing (druid, warlock, hunter...)

Alanthus you have to factor some things in to whether or not these characters are being dropped because they are not fun or because of some other factors...

1. Various server downtimes spread people all over the place. Chances are they started the character to just play for a few... not really ever intending to stick with it.

2. People like myself have a 1-15 level character of every class just because its fun to play around with a lower level that you can give good gear too.

3. A lot of people got the game during the holidays... when they found out that a certain server they started on was overpopulated and was constantly loaded with a server que... they may have moved to a more open server.

4. People find out that a PvP server just isn't for them and move on to PvE... or vice versa.

5. WoW leveling is so fast it is dang fun to explore all the newbie areas :)

In a year the 1-10 data may be useful, but until the flood of new players is done... the 1-10 data is just no good.

Store the information for a week or 2 so that who wants to see it have it. If the char lvlup duing this time keep it alive, if not throw it away!
