Closing in on One Million Uploads of Data

Post by bringoutyourdead »

In Ten Years of Census Runs we have had over 940,000 uploads.
Off the cuff calculations says we should hit 1,000,000 uploads later this year.

Will YOU be the One Millionth upload?

Nice! Is there anywhere we can see the current progress on that stat (http://www.warcraftrealms.com/dbstats.php would be a good place for it)? I'll be interested to see when it tips over, quite a milestone for us :D

Oh no!
That is a deep dark secret ...
I will let you know when we get close...
I don't want someone gaming the system to be that special event person.

What if the 1.000.000th upload is from an anonymous user?
Doing census mainly on Draenor; Raluf - Nimsay - Lusmo - Quixx - Sosyan - Garthog - Trubin - Zalistra - Zesmi and Djaang

Lol that would be hilarious. What percentage is anonymous vs attributed to a particular contributor?

Well that could be in interesting calculation... but I'm not going to do it..

To get a better sense of the trends we would have to chunk up the ten years into time slices and see what the trends are between people interested in keeping track of their contributions and those who just want to make a contribution.

Looking at it by raw character update counts.. over all, the top ten contributors only provide about 46% of all anonymous updates.

Looking at the last full month (April) the top ten contributors provided more then 834% of the anonymous updates.
To put it the other way, anonymous contributions were only around 5.7% of just the top ten contributors.

I will say this over the ten year span more then 74 thousand named accounts have contributed to the data uploaded to this site.

edit: Though we have to remember due to some corruption issues and maintenance issues the total number of character updates changed.
Either through removal of the low level characters or the segments of the database that could not be recovered after the corruption.

the tracking of uploaded files was not impacted by that corruption.

Update on the number of uploads:
as of just now we are just short of 952 thousand uploads.

From my initial calculations, I had expected the count to be higher.. our upload rate has dropped.

But that can be seen by low EU data levels.

On the other hand... we are closing in on a rare moment... Americas/Oceanic counts could reach the Zero RED zone on the Most Wanted list soon.

Bored.. or at least having worked too long today on a project that demands absolute attention to detail..

So I am looking at Warcraftrealms.com hidden history...

The 100,000th upload of data happened on 2005-10-08 and was uploaded by bamse4470 from Denmark.

The 200,000th upload of data was on 2006-04-08 by DavidManvell from USA

The 300,000th upload of data was on 2006-10-25 by pookievander probably also USA

The 400,000th upload of data was on 2007-04-17 by Silent002 from England

The 500,000th upload of data was on 2007-12-05 by MikeFre from ???

The 600,000th upload of data was on 2008-08-26 by RickH from USA ???

The 700,000th upload of data was on 2009-08-03 by Getafixsnow from ???

The 800,000th upload of data was on 2010-12-31 by Padanfain (why am I not surprised?)

The 900,000th upload of data was on 2013-06-01 by Agris probably from Germany

From this list, only Padanfain is still active with us today.

Not sure what was the real cause of the upload slow down.
Better usage of UniUploader and the larger data set it can handle, so fewer upload connections needed?
A general down turn of World of Warcraft interest?
or the beginnings of Rollie's trouble with maintaining the site and code?

All I can say for sure.. is that while I was digging out these nuggets of data, I finished 18 realm-faction census runs for the EU region.. and haven't yet bothered to upload for today.

Hah, Padanfain is the only one of those I've even heard of, goes to show it's luck rather than quantity :)

It certainly has slowed of late; I'd guess a combination of all the factors you mentioned, plus the rise of the armory and armory-scraping sites (from what I can tell via a quick google, armory was added in 2007, we started slowing down in 2008) - this one's faded out a bit in comparison, whenever it's mentioned people always moan "it's not accurate"... well, in many cases, that's true, because of lack of contributors, a vicious circle really... :?

Thinking of activity and stats, I'm curious - I'll have been on WCR for 10 years next week, how many other people are still active that are in the 10 year+ club? No worries if it's too much of a pain to find that out, just curious :)

I see from checking profiles above that Hybuir is still around and uploading after 10+ years anyway :)

Also when you add in the 18 months between CensusPlus updates during most of WotLK expansion which didn't help keep interest is the addon and site.

Looking at the download counts from the curseforge developer site, our average for downloads of CensusPlus updates dropped by about 50% from pre WotLK times to MOP and current time.

Doing a database query (something I wouldn't have tried on Rollie's machines)
limited to uploads for this year... and user numbers under 5000..which excludes Balgair

Djambo is our most consistent uploader with an early start on the site 2005/08/02

Darkon who just recently restarted uploading (has the most recent upload!) started 2005/06/14
by coming back today, has the longest record from sign up to latest upload

However
Yeoman who started 2005/02/17 was still uploading until 2015/02 is our earliest member to still be active uploading in 2015

Ah I remember Djambo I think, and good to see a few others are still here too - after so long, and with such a decline in WoW overall, never mind in this site, I was curious how many still remained :) Thanks!

Peeked at the uploads table stats this morning. just about 955k.
At this rate it will be years before we hit 1M uploads.

Maybe I should just disable Uniuploader....

Just Kidding.

Instead.. maybe we all should remember to actually do an upload now and then..
but then the holiday season is upon us.. and who has time to sit in front of a computer.

Personally, I have cut down a great deal.

I have been guildless (or my precise, alone in my guild) this expansion, so I have done no raiding except for LFR. When not raiding and all pets are blue25, then WoD offers nothing.

Combined with WoD have the worst levelling experience to date, which means I only have one max level toon (first time ever, I didn't have atleast 3 max level toons, short after release), results in not many censuses by my hand..

And there you have it.. blame it on FuxieDK

no just kidding, blame it on Blizzard... the last two expansion packs have just been more weird then compelling.

At least the videos of the Legion Alpha testing of the Demon Hunter looks interesting.

Yeah, WoD doesn't offer much for my playstyle: I love soloable content, outdoors questing and storylines... levelling was perfect, but as soon as I reached 100, it got boring fast. Still a few things I can work on, but I've not yet found the motivation to do so... I'll get there eventually though. I'm hoping Legion will be an improvement; the presentations at Blizzcon sounded like they've learned a lot of good lessons from WoD, so fingers crossed!

Levelling is set in stone... No freedom to do what you please, due to extreme phasing..

For all it's worth, levelling might just as well be replaced by a cinematic.

TBC questing with 2-3 different hubs and 15 different quests at the same time and ni fekking phasing... Those were the days. That was the pinacle of questing..
